bak-rak tow-ball mounted carrier for anything - from bikes to bins

STRENGTH & SAFETY

Strength

The way that bak-rak mounts onto a tow-ball gives a far stronger mounting system than anything comparable on the market. The base-rak has been tested with a weight of 650kg - equivalent to about 8 people. Even when it broke - substantially beyond this load, it's failure was safe and it would stay attached to the car and supporting its load. However it still imperative that the rack is used sensibly. If the loads are mounted away from the car it will put acute bending loads on the rack and tow-bracket. In this case we supply load straps to support the outer edge of the load back to a door or roof rack.

See below for a picture of the test which was carried out at Lloyds British test house in Birmingham.

Safety

The whole design of bak-rak has in mind totally safe operation. We use a factor of safety of 5X - whereas the normal figure for bike racks is 3X.  And the whole idea of mounting bikes or luggage onto a rigid tow-bar is inherently safer than other forms of loading.

In the event of an accident items mounted on the tow-bar hit the back of the car , rather than being hurled into the accident site from the roof or mounted above the back window. If the collision is from the rear then the carried items offer an additional crumple zone to reduce the effects on the vehicle occupants.

600kgs loaded and the base-rak is unbroken. Don't do this at home!
